Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu has cautioned that the proposed state police system must never be used as a tool for political intimidation, urging lawmakers to establish strong safeguards that guarantee accountability and professionalism.

Speaking at the 2026 South-East Regional Security Summit, Kalu said any decentralised policing framework must be built on accountability, professionalism and public service.

He argued that Nigeria’s centralised policing structure is overstretched and requires reforms to improve security across the country.

According to him, the constitutional amendment on state police should bring policing closer to communities while ensuring the Nigeria Police Force remains effective.

Kalu assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would include safeguards to prevent governors or political actors from abusing state police.

He also advocated stronger regional collaboration, intelligence sharing, technology-driven policing and greater community participation to address insecurity.

The Deputy Speaker added that the House of Representatives remains committed to supporting security reforms through legislation, oversight and adequate funding.
