Nigeria’s long-debated plan for state policing is moving closer to reality as the Senate begins legislative work on a system designed to strengthen security while preventing abuse of power.

Speaking in Abuja, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele confirmed that lawmakers are actively developing a decentralised policing framework that prioritises accountability and national safety.

He explained that the National Assembly is committed to creating a balanced structure that ensures security agencies serve the public without political interference.

The push for state police has gained wider support in recent times, with many stakeholders arguing that decentralisation will improve safety, especially in local communities across Nigeria.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has backed the proposal, while security authorities have already presented a comprehensive plan detailing how the system would operate nationwide.

The proposal outlines a gradual rollout over several years, beginning with necessary legal and constitutional changes, along with safeguards to prevent misuse by those in power.

Under the proposed arrangement, policing responsibilities would be shared between federal and state authorities, with each focusing on specific types of security challenges.

Bamidele noted that the reform is part of a broader effort to improve governance, strengthen institutions, and enhance the protection of lives and property.

He further assured that the final structure would follow international standards, ensuring fairness, transparency, and respect for citizens’ rights.

According to him, the Senate remains committed to delivering a policing system that works for all Nigerians and supports long-term national stability.
