Kenneth Okonkwo, a spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s ADC presidential campaign, has mocked Peter Obi and other politicians who attended the launch of Seyi Makinde’s presidential campaign office, questioning their tendency to appear at almost every political gathering.

Okonkwo spoke during an interview with News Central after he was asked why the African Democratic Congress did not send representatives to Monday’s event in Abuja.

The ADC chieftain said the party had no obligation to attend because the inauguration was primarily an Allied Peoples Movement event. He argued that the gathering should be regarded as an APM affair rather than an occasion requiring the participation of ADC leaders.

“As far as I’m concerned, that is an APM affair and it should be attributed to APM,” he stated.

He then took a swipe at politicians who attended, making comments that appeared directed at Obi and other political figures at the event. According to him, some politicians are always willing to turn up whenever they receive an invitation.

Okonkwo said such politicians would attend almost any function, whether it was a major political gathering or a private celebration, because they were eager to be seen publicly.

“Those people that were there—even if you had invited them for naming ceremony or birthday party—they are known for people who like to wave to people,” he said.

Taking the criticism further, he said their enthusiasm would remain even when there was little or no crowd to acknowledge them, using the expression that they could continue waving “to trees.”

“Even if there’s no crowd, they will still be waving to trees. It’s just normal for them. If you’re doing anything and you call them they will come,” Okonkwo added.

Obi was among the political figures who attended the event and used the occasion to speak about the 2027 presidential contest. The NDC candidate said Makinde possessed the qualifications to pursue the presidency in the next general election.

Obi also cautioned against allowing the 2027 race to become another platform for political quarrels and divisions, arguing that attention should instead be directed towards the issues confronting Nigerians.

Okonkwo’s comments have added a fresh layer to the political exchanges surrounding the 2027 race, coming at a time when opposition politicians are increasingly making their positions known and testing possible alliances ahead of the election.
