President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army to 12 divisions and authorised the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel to improve security operations, strengthen border protection and enhance the military’s response to threats across Nigeria.
The Presidency said the initiative also includes the recruitment of 28,000 additional military personnel and the establishment of four new divisional headquarters in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo and Benin City.
According to the Presidency, the restructuring is designed to improve command and control, strengthen border security and enable faster responses to security threats across the country.
The implementation will be carried out in two phases, with the first expected to be completed by September 2026 and the second by December 2026.
The government said the expansion is supported by increased investment in military equipment, troop welfare and operational readiness.
President Tinubu also praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, and members of the Nigerian Army for their service and professionalism.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the Armed Forces and improving national security.
