NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has challenged President Bola Tinubu to explain how his administration has used billions of naira in borrowed funds, while accusing him of presiding over a record number of poor Nigerians.

Obi spoke on Monday at the inauguration of the NDC campaign council in Kaduna State, where he criticised the President’s handling of poverty and his response to opposition criticism.

He questioned the benefits Nigerians had received from the money borrowed by the Federal Government and demanded answers about the administration’s performance under the 2023, 2024 and 2025 budgets.

The former Anambra governor also criticised Tinubu for blaming political opponents instead of explaining what his government had achieved.

According to Obi, the President’s record on poverty should be a central issue in assessing the administration’s performance.

“He has made history as the president that has produced the highest number of poor people according to the recent report,” Obi said.

He also referred to Tinubu’s second-term campaign launch, arguing that the President had missed an opportunity to explain the use of public funds and the results delivered by his administration.

“Rather than explain to Nigerians what he used all the billions he borrowed for, or what he achieved with the 2023, 2024 and 2025 budgets, he blamed other people,” Obi said.

The NDC candidate said he and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, would focus on solving Nigeria’s problems rather than assigning blame, positioning their proposed approach as different from the one he criticised.
