Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, has declared that President Bola Tinubu was the real loser of the Osun governorship election, warning that the result could spell trouble for the APC ahead of 2027.
Momodu made the statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he argued that the election had exposed what he described as the ruling party’s dependence on Tinubu’s political influence.
According to him, APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji and former governor Gboyega Oyetola were largely “name droppers” who repeatedly invoked Tinubu’s name during the campaign instead of relying on their own political strength.
“Without any doubt whatsoever he lost,” Momodu said, insisting that the outcome should be interpreted as a setback for Tinubu rather than simply a defeat for the APC candidate.
The ADC chieftain argued that the result could have consequences beyond Osun, particularly because of the proximity of the 2027 general elections and the possibility of voters in other states drawing lessons from what happened.
He said the APC was worried that the Osun result could send a negative signal to voters across the country ahead of the next presidential election.
“And the reason I would tell you is the fear of January 2027,” Momodu said, arguing that the ruling party was concerned about the message coming out of the Osun election.
He maintained that voters in Osun had demonstrated a willingness to support their preferred candidate based on merit, regardless of whether the candidate had the backing of Tinubu.
Momodu also praised Davido for using social media to keep Nigerians informed during the election, saying the singer’s regular updates helped voters follow events as they unfolded.
The ADC chieftain alleged that the vote-counting process was temporarily halted at a critical point, claiming that without the attention generated by social media, there could have been an attempt to manipulate the process.
“Otherwise, till midnight, at a stage they stopped counting the votes and they were going to do their abracadabra as usual,” he alleged.
His comments come as opposition politicians intensify their interpretation of the Osun result, with several arguing that the election could provide an early indication of the political battle expected to unfold in 2027.
For Momodu and other opposition figures, the central lesson from Osun is that voters may be increasingly willing to make independent choices at the polls, potentially creating a fresh challenge for the ruling APC as the next presidential election approaches.
