Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has said northern presidential aspirants should wait until 2031 for the presidency, arguing that the South should first complete an eight-year cycle in power under the current rotation arrangement.

Yusuf made the statement on Sunday at the Government House in Kano while speaking about the rotation of presidential power between northern and southern Nigeria.

The governor said each region should have the opportunity to produce a president for two consecutive terms before power moves to the other region.

He argued that completing two terms would give administrations enough time to execute major policies, development programmes and projects without an early disruption of their agenda.

Yusuf consequently called for support for President Bola Tinubu to complete a second term, saying the South should be allowed to complete its own two-term cycle.

He said the North had already completed eight years in the presidency under former President Muhammadu Buhari between 2015 and 2023.

According to the governor, the South’s current cycle should therefore continue until 2031, after which the presidency would return to the North.

“Power will return to the North after the completion of the Southern region’s two-term cycle in 2031,” Yusuf said.

He called on northern political stakeholders and presidential aspirants to exercise patience and allow the current political arrangement to run its course.

The governor’s position comes as political parties and potential presidential contenders intensify preparations for the 2027 election, with zoning and power rotation emerging among the issues shaping political discussions.

Yusuf also appealed to politicians to conduct peaceful, issue-based campaigns and avoid personal attacks, inflammatory statements and actions capable of threatening national stability.

He urged political actors to focus on their achievements, policies and plans for Nigerians as preparations for the next general election gather momentum.
