A viral claim that Davido had been banned from Edo State has taken a dramatic twist, with Governor Monday Okpebholo breaking his silence and declaring that the singer is not only welcome but free to perform in the state.
Okpebholo’s statement came after a viral video by his aide, Pastor Kassy Chukwu, claimed that Davido had been barred from coming to Edo.
But the governor has now rejected the claim, saying the Edo State Government had nothing to do with any alleged ban on the Afrobeats star.
In a statement issued through the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, Okpebholo described the person who announced the alleged ban as an impostor and fraud.
The governor stressed that Edo State remained open to everyone, regardless of their political persuasion, beliefs, affiliations or personal relationships.
He went further to say that if Davido decides to perform in Edo State in the future, his administration would be willing to collaborate with the singer and host the event.
Okpebholo also praised Davido, describing him as one of Edo’s illustrious sons because of his maternal connection to the state.
According to the governor, Davido has distinguished himself as one of Nigeria’s global ambassadors through his music and his ability to connect people across different social and political divides.
The governor also sought to separate the controversy from the political events that unfolded during last week’s Osun State election, saying whatever happened between Davido and political actors in the state was strictly political.
He maintained that there was nothing personal about the disagreements that surfaced during the election campaigns and insisted that they should not affect Davido’s relationship with Edo State.
Okpebholo said his administration was pleased with Davido’s achievements and commitment to the music industry, adding that the government would be happy to welcome and celebrate him if he visits Edo.
